What Can Be Done Now?

The biggest question in regards to the clean up process is 'How do you clean up billions or trillions of minuscule plastic pieces from trillions of gallons of ocean water?' It sounds like a daunting process, and it is.

There really isn't the technology to start undergoing the process of cleaning up the plastic currently photo-degrading in the ocean (Bockstiegle).

The best way to 'clean up' Trash Island right now is to prevent trash from ever entering the environment. This looks like more recycling, improving the waste management system (providing more garbage receptacles, etc), reducing the amount of garbage produced, and educating the public on the harms of garbage.

This takes us back to what we all learned in elementary school: reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Think about what are you doing to the environment:
How much trash do you produce? How often do you throw out that can instead of recycling it? What about that plastic water bottle?
